Spring Break and Skin Cancer

After a long winter, here comes the sun -- and students on spring break.

Many will bask until they burn, it's vacation sun that researchers call "intense intermittent sun exposure."

Texas Health Resources dermatologist Dr. Peter Hino said he expects to be busy next week when students return to north Texas.

"We certainly do see more people come in with bad sunburns, not as many as you may think because I think a lot of them just tough it out, they don't know the damage they've done at that point in time," Said Dr. Hino.

Researchers now believe vacation sun is actually worse than daily sun exposure, the type that people who work outdoors get. Brook Anderson said she knows first hand, and back and face about intense intermittent sun exposure.

"Probably about three years ago I went down to Galveston and laid on the beach all day and was blistered," Said Brook.

It was a bad burn, the type spring breakers get. Brook said she didn't think she would burn that badly.

"I just kind of laid out there and wasn't thinking about sunscreen or anything," Said Brook who has a family history of melanoma and now gets screened once a year.

Dr. Hino believes vacation sun does increase the chance of getting basil cell, squamous cell and even potentially melanoma.

"I certainly do, I think you'll probably find on a cellular level those intense bad sunburns that there is more epidermal cell damage to the skin," Said Dr. Hino.

But every year like the swallows to Capistrano, students head for the beach and bake. Dr. Hino said his patients are getting younger and younger.

"But that invasive melanoma is on the rise, despite our best efforts and especially on the rise in young women in that age group from 15 to 39. it's alarming," Said Dr. Hino.

Especially for women like Brook who've had a vacation sunburn.

Dr. Hino said that getting base tan or going to a tanning salon before going on vacation doesn't help and simply compounds the problem.

Do we take the right precautions when it comes to protecting our skin?

Hey guys so I know all of us at one time or another have been told to “cover up” or “make sure to use you’re sunscreen!”. However I don’t know about you but I’d be too preoccupied enjoying the weather that I would forgot to cover up, or repeat putting on lotion. Consequently as young adults, we occasionally enjoy a nice bronzed tan in any season!  For I am guilty of occasionally using spray tans or tanning beds to give me that sun-kissed glow.

Moreover I feel as more prevail the media makes it to be skinny, its becoming more prevail to be tanned as well. More men and women are picking up this trend, and making it a daily routine within their lifestyles, (just like going to the gym).  In turn I did some research on prevention of skin cancer and find some interesting articles on Skin cancer that are informational as well as current news.

American Academy of Pediatrics Calls for Ban on Youth Tanning

IN THE HEADLINES...

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), a group of 60,000 pediatricians, today called for all US tanning salons to bar minors. With this new policy statement, the AAP joins health groups such as the American Medical Association, the World Health Organization (WHO), the Academy of Dermatology, and The Skin Cancer Foundation in demanding a ban on indoor tanning for young people.
“We strongly commend the AAP for this definitive statement pushing for prohibition of indoor tanning for young people,” said Perry Robins, MD, President of The Skin Cancer Foundation. “The damage caused by the UV radiation from tanning beds and the sun is cumulative and often irreversible, and the earlier people start to tan, the higher their risk of developing skin cancer in their lifetimes.”

No Tans on Oscar’s Leading Ladies

The three leading ladies of the 2011 Oscars, Natalie Portman (Best Actress), Melissa Leo (Best Supporting Actress) and Anne Hathaway (co-host), also led the way with beautiful, glowing skin. While the fashion reviews were mixed, all agree that healthy radiant skin was the accessory of choice.
Hollywood heavy hitters – including Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Bullock, Scarlett Johansson, Annette Benning, and Jennifer Hudson – know that naturally radiant skin is what looks best on the runway. Tanning is undesirable — it's not fashionable or healthy. Natural, glowing, healthy skin is the look that everyone wants.
As we launch the 2011 Go With Your Own Glow™ campaign, our hope is that these celebrities will help lead by example and that tanning as a lifestyle will become obsolete.

If you’re an occasional MTV viewer like I am. Then you might have heard or seen the show The Jersey Shore. The show charcterizes cast -mates that tan regularly and religiously as if it’s a part of their everyday lifestyle. Here's a clip of when EXTRA TV hosts the cast and analyzes their risk of developing skin cancer.

Hey guys
I know its been awhile since i last posted. However I've have been looking and researching into Eastern study abroad programs for this upcoming summer 2011. I've consider the Australia and New Zea land Study Abroad program for Communication Majors. The program seems like a  incredible experience that is affordable and worth the destination's you travel to. In addition to the sociology department are also holding a study abroad opportunity to go to the Netherlands for a month where you travel to different parts of Europe. I'm further doing some research on both of them and weighing the pro's and con's.  If any one is interested in studying abroad this summer and getting senior-seminar credit and credit for their courses i posted the link on the bottom of the post.
I feel that studying a broad is an incredible experience, and definitely something i would want to include on my resume.
I'll keep you guys posted!
